Tannersville, established in roughly 1750, by John Larner was previously a part of Philadelphia. Tannersville, according to one historian, was originally called “Pocono Point.” Numerous Indian tracks were later broadened for stagecoach use and eventually evolved into highways. One of these most famous trails includes the Lackawanna Trail (modernly called Rt. 611), which runs through Tannersville and Sullivan’s Trail. Another trail, Learned’s Tavern (which most recently was under the name “The 1740 Alpine Inn”), burned down in 2000. It used to be established along the Lackawanna Trail. Then, in 1779, it was the last structure on the frontier. On June 18, 1779, General John Sullivan and his soldiers camped at the “Learn’s” or “Learned’s” Tavern. Their troop later carved out a road (now Sullivan’s Trail) through the backwoods. The village of Tannersville, located in Pocono Township, is almost 900 feet above sea level. Tannersville has so much to offer, including The Crossings Premium Outlets; Camel Back’s skiing resort/Water Park; and so much more. Tannersville is a very popular Pocono spot for both locals and visitors alike.
